First visit
What to Expect on Your Child’s First Visit
Come meet our dental team. We want you and your child to be comfortable with the first visit. Here’s a few things you can expect.
We follow the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommendation that your child’s first dental visit should occur by their first birthday or when their first tooth appears. Early visits are all about establishing a positive, fun foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
We believe in empowering children through familiarity. Before starting any step, we use age-appropriate language to explain (tell), let them see and touch safe instruments (show), and then gently perform the care (do), ensuring they feel in control and secure.
For our youngest patients, examinations are often performed comfortably while your child sits in your lap facing you, with their head resting in our dentist’s lap. This cozy, familiar position allows for a thorough check while keeping you close by for comfort.
Depending on your child’s age and developmental stage, a first visit typically includes a gentle evaluation of their teeth, jaws, and gums, a light cleaning, a protective fluoride application, and plenty of time for you to ask questions about teething, brushing techniques, pacifier habits, and diet.
Keep it positive and casual! Avoid using words like “pain,” “shot,” or “drill.” Instead, talk about going to count your child’s teeth and meeting a friendly dental team. Reading a fun, kid-friendly book or watching an animation about going to the dentist beforehand can also work wonders.
