Sedation

nitrous oxide
Nitrous oxide, often called “laughing gas,” is a form of minimal sedation that helps children feel calm and relaxed during dental treatment. It is given through a small nose mask and helps ease anxiety while your child remains fully awake, responsive, and able to communicate throughout the visit. The effects wear off quickly once the gas is stopped, allowing children to return to their normal activities shortly after their appointment. We’ll discuss whether nitrous oxide is a good option for your child to help make their dental experience as comfortable and positive as possible!
general anesthesia
General anesthesia allows your child to receive dental treatment while fully asleep and unaware of the procedure. It may be considered for children who need extensive dental work, are very young, or have difficulty tolerating treatment while awake. General anesthesia is a last-resort option and is only recommended after all other appropriate treatment options have been exhausted. This decision is never made lightly, and your child’s safety is always our top priority. Dr. Maggie is an attending at Hackensack University Medical Center, where she provides dental care for children who may require treatment under general anesthesia. We’ll discuss the process, risks, and benefits with you to ensure you feel informed and supported every step of the way.
